Russia has signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Niger's military-led government, aiming to build nuclear power plants and enhance the country's energy infrastructure. The memorandum, finalized in Niamey, focuses on electricity generation, nuclear medicine, and workforce training, marking a significant step in Russia's expanding influence in West Africa. Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive system for peaceful atomic energy development in Niger, which has been under military rule since a July 2023 coup. This agreement follows Russia's support for Niger's new regime and efforts to strengthen bilateral relations through a defense pact and potential joint ventures in various sectors, including energy and agriculture.
